Maths

  • Mental Maths – Week 30 p.60 & 61 (Use each question as a teaching point)
  • Data – Your child will be learning how read data from a chart over the coming days This will be done by means of games and activities using concreate materials.
  • Mathematical Language: How many? Count, more, less, fewer, pictogram, graph, most, least, equal, same amount, altogether, chart
  • Representing and Interpreting Data: Data can be organised in many ways in everyday life, from pictograms, bar charts to line graphs etc. In Senior Infants, your child was expected to represent and interpret data (information/objects, etc.) in two columns or rows. In First Class, she is asked to represent data in four rows or columns. It is best to introduce your child to data by using a range of objects that are familiar to her.
  • Making Rows: Give your child up to 10 buttons/pasta shells/clothes/pegs/fridge magnets etc. It is best to start with only two rows or columns and build up to four rows/columns. Ask her to place a row of 7 buttons, then ask her to put 5 pasta shells directly next to the row of buttons. These rows should be in one to one correspondence (directly under each other). Your child should be able to see the pasta shells in the bottom rows that correspond to the buttons in the top row. She should be able to see that there are two extra buttons in the top row. Ask questions like:

How many buttons are in the top row?

How many pasta shells in the bottom row?

How many more items are in the top row than in the bottom row?

How many fewer items are in the bottom row than in the top row?

  • You can now ask your child to add a row or column of clothes pegs and ask similar type questions.
  • Make a pictogram/bar chart of the amount of fruit/vegetable in your house.
  • Practise +5 tables (5+1=6, 5+2=7…) Time your child and see how long it takes her to add 5 from 0 – 12

Ex: water =wet. You could send us a picture of you doing the experiment to photos@scoilbhridecailini.ie. Please include your child’s name, her teacher’s name and whether you’re happy for us to share the picture on our website.

Wednesday: ee

  • How many words do you know that have the ee sound? If you can’t think of any here’s a hint, can you think of any words that rhyme with bee?
  • Look at Groups 1-4. What letter sounds can you use from these groups to make an –ee word?
  • How many words can you make?

  • Ask an adult to call some sentences out to you and write them down. Draw a picture to go with the sentence.
  • Look at all the words you made this week. Set a timer and write down all the ones you can remember in 5/4/3 minutes!

Dolch Sight Words:

Dolch Words are lists of some of the most common words in the English language. You can visit the following link to play a quick memory game to help your daughter practice the first list of words. Try writing the words from the game on flashcards/ pieces of paper and use them for practice. Can you read the word? Write the word? Use the word in a sentence?
